Taiwan Old-Age Dependency Is Projected to More Than Double by 2050

Derived from NDC age shares, the ratio rises from 27.8 to 71.4 per 100 workers.

What the Data Shows

Old-age dependency translates ageing into pressure on the working-age base. Using NDC age-share projections, Taiwan’s ratio rises from about 27.8 elderly people per 100 working-age people in 2024 to 71.4 by 2050. The matching support ratio falls from 3.6 working-age people per elderly person to 1.4.

Data table

Old-age dependency — 2024 27.8 per 100 workers
Old-age dependency — 2050 71.4 per 100 workers
Old-age dependency — change +43.6 pts
Support ratio — 2024 3.6 workers per elderly
Support ratio — 2050 1.4 workers per elderly
Support ratio — change -2.2

Data notes & caveats

Projection values are medium-variant assumptions. Old-age dependency is derived from NDC age shares; support ratio is directly shown in the NDC report.

Methodology

Old-age dependency is derived as 65+ share divided by 15–64 share, multiplied by 100. Potential support ratio uses NDC’s working-age population divided by elderly population.
