Taiwan Nuclear Retirement Timeline, 2018-2025

Six reactor license expiries ended with Taiwan’s last operating reactor shut in May 2025.

What the Data Shows

Taiwan’s nuclear timeline compresses a seven-year retirement sequence into one visual. The final Maanshan Unit 2 shutdown in May 2025 ended commercial nuclear operation after the earlier Chinshan, Kuosheng and Maanshan retirements. The sequence gives context to why nuclear’s power-generation share had already fallen to about 4% in 2024.

Data table

2018 Chinshan 1 License expired Dec.
2019 Chinshan 2 License expired Jul.
2021 Kuosheng 1 License expired Dec.
2023 Kuosheng 2 License expired Mar.
2024 Maanshan 1 License expired Jul.
2025 Maanshan 2 Last reactor shut May.

Data notes & caveats

This is a reactor-retirement timeline, not a full annual generation series. Nuclear generation did not instantly reach zero in calendar 2025 because Maanshan Unit 2 operated until May.

Methodology

Milestones use Nuclear Safety Commission license-expiry dates for Chinshan, Kuosheng and Maanshan units. The 2024 generation-share context comes from Energy Administration/EIA summaries of final generation data. Timeline dates are rounded to month or year for SVG readability.
