Taiwan Conscription Shift, 2024

Eligible men born in or after 2005 moved from four months to one year.

What the Data Shows

Taiwan’s conscription shift changes the manpower base behind its territorial defence system. From 2024, eligible men born in or after 2005 moved from four months of military training to one year of mandatory service. The official plan also raised conscript pay and expanded training content, including a larger live-fire requirement.

Data notes & caveats

The one-year term applies to eligible men born in or after 2005. Men outside that cohort may remain under different rules, so the graphic describes the policy shift for the affected cohort.

Methodology

Uses official Presidential Office and Executive Yuan descriptions of the force-realignment policy. The service-term multiple is 12 months divided by four months; live-round change uses the official basic-training figures cited in the presidential remarks.
