Taiwan Semiconductor Value Chain: Foundry, Design and Backend

Foundry dominated 2024 output; packaging and testing together were 11.7%.

What the Data Shows

AI chips need more than leading-edge wafers. Advanced packaging and testing are the back-end layers that help turn silicon into usable high-performance systems. This value-chain chart shows that Taiwan’s semiconductor revenue is still dominated by foundry production, but the backend segment is large enough to matter as AI packaging constraints rise.

Data table

IC revenue NT$5.32tn
Foundry 61.0%
IC design 23.9%
Packaging 8.0%
Testing 3.8%
Other 3.3%

Data notes & caveats

Packaging and testing are not limited to advanced packaging. Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate (CoWoS) revenue is not separately disclosed in the public segment table.

Methodology

Use 2024 Taiwan integrated-circuit industry revenue and segment values from Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association / Industrial Technology Research Institute-linked reports. Foundry, design, packaging and testing values are divided by total industry revenue. Residual is shown as other manufacturing or category difference.

Source consistency notes

Segment values are industry-source estimates; the graphic is reliable as a sector structure view, not a company-level revenue statement.
