Taiwan GDP Growth Volatility vs Singapore, Korea and Japan

Singapore had the highest growth volatility since 2000; Taiwan sat above Korea and Japan.

What the Data Shows

GDP volatility measures how bumpy an economy’s growth path has been. Taiwan’s export-led model creates cyclical exposure, but the comparison shows Singapore has been more volatile while Korea and Japan have been steadier. The ranking gives a compact risk lens, separate from average growth or income level.

Data table

Singapore 4.1pp 2000–24
Taiwan 2.7pp 2000–24
Korea 2.1pp 2000–24

Data notes & caveats

This is a mixed-source comparison because Taiwan is not always included in the same World Bank country series as peers. Use as a source-labelled volatility benchmark.

Methodology

Calculate the sample standard deviation of annual real GDP growth rates for 2000–2024. Taiwan uses DGBAS/CBC national accounts; Korea, Singapore and Japan use World Bank GDP growth. Values are percentage-point standard deviations.
